The lightening blew our router up, it was the biggest strike of lightening I can ever recall seeing, I thought the house had been hit! Sholto hasn't slept since and it has been painful trying to make him.
We have now bought a new router and are back up and running.
Yesterday was one of my favourites in the calendar year, my godfather hosts his annual golf day at Henley-on-Thames golf course. It is always great fun, I have always loved golf but seldom get to play, in fact, that was the first time the clubs have been out since his day in 2012. I played very well and actually won the individual prize, our team won the morning prize and the afternoon too. Almost a clean sweep! I shall now look forward to next year, I fear my handicap mark will be cut.
Hopstrings is very well, so much so I have entered her for a mares novice hurdle next Friday at Bangor. I will be in Corsica and Alice will in charge. Alice will see what each day brings and we'll make a decision to run or not much nearer the time. There is a fair bit of rain around, after Tuesdays run I wonder if she can handle a bit of soft ground. If it was easy it would be boring..........
Alice will always help with most things but has refused to do my blog. If my I pad functions I may post the odd one from the pool in Corsica. Sophie will probably shout at me for even considering it, I'm used to that!!!!!

22nd July 2013
Hopstrings is very well and will run tomorrow, I hope any rain stays away until after she's run, we all feel she wants it rattling! She will have to up her game to turn around the form with AsIam who beat her by 24 lengths at Worcester. I don't think it is impossible as she was all at sea when she hit the soft! ground at Worcester. The whole family are coming on a road trip tomorrow, my tolerance levels will be at a all time low by the time we get there. Very strict noise control is in place on the way, if she wins they'll be plenty of noise on the way home. When does term start again!!!!!!!
Jane Poulter was here this morning to see her Nayef filly who will eventually go into training with Roger Charlton. There is no rush from owner or trainer as she is still backward enough. We will reassess the situation at the end of August. All the others went out and about and seem very happy in their work.
This afternoon I have spent dealing with Plutusfx a currency exchange company who make all our payments to the Irish Sales companies. It takes time as different people, partnerships and syndicates have to pay a certain share of each horse etc. Contracts have to be drawn up and banks have to be notified who is paying what. Plutusfx are very good and make the job easy, it is just time consuming sorting it all out. We have to hedge a bit but always try and strike when we think there is a deal to be had on rates.
It is that time of year when cars have MOTs, new tyres have to be bought and cheques have to be signed, all very depressing. Thankfully, I'm going on holiday on Saturday and will do my best not to worry about a thing - highly unlikely but a nice idea.

We have just bought lot 385 out of the Derby Sale, I was actually under bidder but he was bought back in on the day. We have done a deal and Ben Brain vetted him yesterday, all was well and he will be collected by Ken Gamble next week. He is out of Lady Mariah, she was unraced but a half sister to the great race mare Mariah Rollins. We all loved him at the sale and am delighted to have got him.
50% of him will go into the Pudlicote Partnership and the other 50% will be owned by an individual.
This morning was a bit disjointed as I was dealing with a broken water trough. Countrywide has to be the worse shop in the world, I've never liked it and seldom go there. This morning Stow Ag was shut so my options were limited. Unless your a happy hacker they are the store with everything that no one wants. Tracks Perkins came to the rescue and the horses soon had their water in full swing. Talking of swing, Tiger Woods is in the front rank of the British Open and playing really well. I'm a big fan of Tigers.
The second test is a bit disappointing as it looks as if there is no match at all. However, it has been a fantastic summer of sport.
This afternoon Panda and went for a ride before evening stables.

Hazel Brook will be heading back to be trained by Mary Hambro tomorrow morning. Having run so well last week we are obviously sad to see her go . She only came as Mary's girl was hurt in an accident, thankfully, she has now recovered and naturally Mary wants Hazel Brook back at home.
All the horses are now out and about and behaving beautifully.
This afternoon we all went to Giffords Circus in Barrington, a must for children . Eva McCoy was there with her godfather Carl Llewellyn amongst many other familiar faces.

All the Derby Sale horses are now out and about, the dust in the school is too much and they were getting a bit fed up in there. Once they're balanced and tracking up correctly we generally get them out and about anyhow. All behaved well and I couldn't be happier with the bunch of horses we have for the coming year. Lord Wellesley (Marson Stud) has been in contact regarding a Yeats filly to be broken-in. She will be the first Yeats horse I'll have anything to do with, I am very much looking forward to getting to know her. He is a stallion that has been very popular and there has been plenty of talk about his progeny.
This afternoon was spent doing paper work in preparation for the end of the month, I didn't want to go away knowing all the paper work needed to be dealt with immediately on my return.

The 2 races Hopstrings has been entered for have 11 entries and Southwell looks the less competitive. I gave her a light bit of work this morning and she's very well.
We went out and about on some of Derby Sale horses this morning, all behaved beautifully and all jockeys stayed on board. Once the horses were all done and dusted I fogged the barn.
The children have all been on a pony rally for the last 2 days, after lunch I dashed across to watch them and was pleasantly surprised how well they all ride when compared to other children of similar ages. Tilly was jumping Tobby, who has a massive jump in him, she landed on parts she'd rather not of done and soon decided that enough was enough as the poles were raised. Sholto and Panda also did some jumping. Conker, nearly jumped Sholto out of the saddle but he sat tight and did very well. Panda is fearless and would jump anything given the chance.
Rain showers on Friday, this has been the hottest period of time for 7 years, enjoy it, we may have to wait another 7 years!

Hopstrings has been entered for Southwell and Bangor a week today, a mares 2mile 4 furlong novice hurdle at Southwell and a 2mile novice at Bangor. She is very well and I'm looking forward to running her again. Hazel Brook is in good form and hasn't left an oat since her run.
We took a few of the Goffs 3 year olds out and about this morning, Alice fell off!!!! she was asleep after her holiday! Otherwise all is well.
It was with great sadness that I heard of the sudden death of Mike Trickey. I have known him since I was a teenager, his daughter Becs is a great friend of a friend of mine, he even threaten to give me a ride on one occasion but for some reason it didn't happen. I think it may of had something to do with the amount of Stella Artois I consumed in my teenage years. He was always on to me about my wild days and always offered good advice, it is only now latter on in life I realise how right he was. I had been seeing him at the sales over the last few years and we've always shared a joke or 2. He had a great sense of humour and I shall miss my annual chats with him. On one occasion a few years back we were stabled next to each other at Doncaster sales. He complained about his aching, ageing bones and had me trotting up his horse every time a potential purchaser came along!! I read now he finally got his hip replaced. A great man who will be missed by many.

Hazel Brook ran a great race to finish second, by the jockeys own admission she didn't get the best of rides. That is racing and your not going to get a smooth hassle free run every time. I think the winner won well enough and would question if she'd had beaten him given a smoother run. She's come out of the race well and we will bide our time now before having another stab at things when she tells us she's ready to go back to battle.
Charlie's parade of horses went well and by all accounts everyone had an enjoyable day, sadly, there were some faces missing who had other commitments. The feed back we've had from investors seems to be positive and they all seem happy with the stock we bought. It was a tough market place and I think the hard work paid off. Noel Chance who I've known for a long time was on the phone this morning. He said he had been keeping an eye on the sales results. Although he didn't see the individuals he commented on how well we had bought.
All the others are well but seem to be feeling lethargic in the sun! That doesn't count for Cavite Epsilon who deposited me on the ground this morning before kicking me as he cantered off up the gallop. I'll let him go next time!
1-0 in The Ashes, I'd like 2 tickets for a day if anyone has any spare.

The heat this morning was seriously intense, it must have been the hottest day so far the pressure in the air was all too exhausting for horse and rider - I was pleased when I got off my 8th lot.
The Test is certainly going to produce a result, I hope England can skittle out those last 4 weeks before lunch, I think it could easily go either way although England have to be strong favourites.
Tomorrow, all the Pudlicote Partnership horses will be strutting their stuff in front of their many owners and I will be heading to Southwell with Hazel Brook.
This evening has involved more badminton on the lawn and a kebab for supper - not the type from a grotty van on the side of the road!
Alice is back tomorrow so we will all have to stand by our beds, she rules with a rod of iron and we are all afraid of her.

12th July 2013
All horses are well, tipping along nicely. Alice, bless her was in this evening tidying up the horses in the Pudlicote Partnership ready for a show on Sunday.
Hazel Brook's race looks competitive for this time of year, she had a small blow this morning and will stretch her legs tomorrow before heading to Southwell. It is all a learning curve for her and she will no doubt benefit hugely for the experience.
Orange finally sent me a replacement handset which hopefully won't make calls while I'm talking on another!
The test match is fantastic, the children are all on holiday so any chance of watching more than 2 minuets at a time are nil! I'll be the best badminton player in the country by the end of the summer holidays, hopefully, the wind will blow and stop play! Tilly and Sholto are great shots and it is really fun playing with them. Panda hasn't quite mastered it yet.

All the horses carried on in the same vein, we will be schooling them in the arena until the end of the month, by which time they will all be balanced, relaxed and ready for a little trip up the gallop.
Once the horses were all done and dusted I set about repairing some rails around the place, it was a overdue job and a job well done.
The Ashes looks set for a fantastic series, just a shame I have to settle for today at the test on Channel 5. The Aussies now hold the record for the highest scoring 10th wicket stand. Ashton Agar is certainly a name to remember and to fear for many years.

Nothing out of the ordinary happened this morning, the horses are all going nicely in the school, as to be expected some are more forward than others. Charlie was here this afternoon with a member of our syndicate that can't make the parade of horses on Sunday.
Gillies Transport were in to collect Robert Robinson's Flemensfirth ex Loxhill Lady, Robert has called to say the horse has arrived back in Scotland and he's very pleased with him. He will now consider taking him to the Tattersalls August Sale. Someone will end up with a very nice horse.
The children and Sophie had a lovely time camping last night, so much so they are staying out for another evening. I am off to join them for a camp fire supper before retuning to the comfort of our home. There are many advantages to being busy, one of which I don't have to sleep under canvas on a mat!
I noticed the score in The Ashes earlier today and it looks as if we've been a bit poor with bat in hand.

The Derby sale horses were all ridden around the school today, all behaved beautifully and will stay there for 3 or 4 weeks getting balanced and tracking up correctly. From 11.30 this morning I had a stream of people coming to see their horses or in for one thing and another. Will Humphries of Dobson and Horrell dropped in some new feed for me to try and a chat. Michael and Kate Watts came to see the 3 horses they have shares in, Fruits Of Love gelding, Major Martin and a 3 year old by Milan that I bought in Ireland at the Derby sale, he toes out but he's a racehorse if I ever saw one. Charlie was then here with some pals from Australia, I failed to ask them how The Loins got on!
This afternoon was spent fiddling about in the office before evening stables. The children have all gone camping with Sophie and are having a ball.

A busy day with one thing and another. Hazel Brook came out of her work over 1 mile on the grass on Saturday in fine form, she is Southwell bound on Sunday. Charlie has all of his partners coming to see their new purchases from Ireland at 11 A.M so a busy Sunday ahead. They are all going nicely and will be ridden around the school for the first time tomorrow. I can't wait to sit on a few, I stay on the ground until this point unless we have a real bad one and then sadly, I still have to risk my neck rather than anyone else's. As I say to the lads, any idiot can fall off and the man on the ground is far more important!
David Cameron said on the radio today that he can't think of anyone more deserving of a knighthood than Andy Murray. Of course, what he has achieved is phenomenal but whether or not it warrants a knighthood I am not so sure and he is Scottish. I have never warmed to David Cameron and think is a weak prime minster, I'd love to have known what Margaret Thatcher thought of him - I'd bet, pretty much what I think of him. I wonder if she ever went to Cornbury music festival on Saturday before Wimbledon on the Sunday.

What a game of Rugby this afternoon, Sky + has to be one of the greatest things ever. 41 -16 is a wide margin in test rugby theses days and it would, I suppose have been a better match if it was a cliff hanger. The 1st half was sown up pretty early on, there was then a passage of play when the game could have gone either way before The Lions ran out the easy winners. A fabulous tour and one to remember.
All the horses are well, the Derby Sale horses are now riding around the lunge pen and seem very relaxed, I think the heat helps! They are in fact better behaved than a couple we got out of Goffs.
The children and Sophie all headed off to some show in Cirencester this afternoon, sadly, someone has to stay at home to do the work. We are all going away to Corsica for a week at the end of the month, I am very much looking forward to chilling out. Alice is kindly going to house sit for us and will take full control of everything.
I see Charlie Deustch has turned conditional, why theses good young lads do this so soon in their career is beyond me. He has relatively little race riding experience and is now thrown in the deep end apart from occasionally riding against other conditionals in races confined to theses jockeys only. I hope I am proved wrong but I fear his career will now pan out like so many others - if supported, a big if! he will ride out his 7lb claim, struggle when claiming 5lbs and be lost when only claiming 3lbs. I don't know why trainers force their arms. He can be given the same opportunities as an amateur jockey under rules and still get that all important race riding experience in p2ps at weekends. Some do make it and I hope Charlie is one, I'd be very happy to be proved wrong.

The Derby Sale horses were all ridden around the lunge pen, horse and jockey stayed in contact throughout. No Monty Roberts dummy required and not one frightened horse. Charlie was here to see the Goffs horses hacking around the arena, all of which are behaving themselves.
Sam had another operation on his foot and now has to wait a week before heading to Oaksey House for some TLC. I am sure that will speed up any healing and he will soon be back on his feet!
If Andy Murray is ever to win Wimbledon it surely has to be this year, however, it will be no walk in the park and I'm expecting a great match. By my own admission, for the first year in a longtime I have managed to watch 1 single match and have had to settle for today at Wimbledon most evenings. The final will be no exception as I'll have 30 horses to get in from the paddocks on Saturday afternoon.

Emma has joined us for the season, she has been riding out for the last couple of days and will be a great addition to the small team we have here. Tom Campbell was in for a few routine vaccinations and to deal with a few other issues.
Hopstrings has come out of her race well and seems happy. I haven't had a chance to look for another race for her as yet but will do so tonight.
We sat on all the Derby Sale horses in their stables today and I can't see any issues arising with any of them. Mind and Charlie's Robin Des Champs filly was ridden around the school and is lovely. Robert Chugg has to be one of the best, if not the best producers of horses. His horses know their job and are a joy to deal with. Robert was one of the first people to support me when I set the business up and I will always be hugely appreciative of that support when it was desperately needed. I have always had the odd horse for him and have trained him a couple of winners. He is one of the first people I pick the phone up to when I need advice. Once the horses were done and dusted for the morning I spent the afternoon in the office before evening stables.
A heat wave is forecast, enjoy the summer while you can, it will be raining soon.

I have always thought that Kim Bailey is overly harsh with his criticism of Worcester Racecourse. I now think he isn't harsh enough. Hopstrings travelled well until she hit the soft ground. The going stick was 6.8 this morning yet the ground was given as good to firm good in places. Anywhere else that going stick measurement would lead one to believe that it was on the soft side of good. Well, the back straight was good and the home straight good to soft at best. Tom Scudamore was overheard saying there wasn't a patch of good to firm ground on the track. I have no idea how much closer she would have finished had the ground been good to firm but I do know she would have been a lot closer. Worcester should be ashamed of themselves and I feel for the owners who, to some degree, have had a wasted run. Sophie tells me Sholto said "she couldn't handle the ground when she turned into the straight and her action changed." He's a great race reader aged 7. Anyhow, as disappointed as I am, I feel we have reasonable excuses for her. We will see how she is over the next few days and hope to get another run into soon. She'll have learnt a lot today and given firm ground I'd hope she can get her head in front again. Alice very kindly gave up a days holiday to come and help, we've concluded we aren't great loser. To add insult to injury, I came home to find a tax bill on my desk!
All is well on the home front, the Derby Sale horses are now all lent over and we will sit on before the week is out.

2nd July 2013
All the new horses from The Derby Sale were long reined in full tack and I lent over them all bar the Robin Des Champs filly, we bought her off Robert Chugg and he has done all the hard work, she just needed backing which we have now done. Charlie was here to see all the horses and got the measuring stick out. We are having a parade of horses and a lunch on July 14th. Sadly, I may not be around as there is a strong possibility that Hazel Brook will be running in a mares and fillies bumper at Southwell that day.
The 2 dentist arrived at 8.30 this morning and left at 5.30, it has been a long day since 5 a.m. A friend rang from Ireland asking when a quiet time would be for him to come and visit. I told him to come in the first week of May!
Hopstrings has a few to beat tomorrow, I don't really know what to expect, she could win or be tailed off. What I do know is she is very well.
I think I've had enough for today but should really strap myself to the desk and get the June invoices done. Bath and bed I think.

Hopstrings has a few to beat tomorrow, I don't really know what to expect, she could win or be tailed off. What I do know is she is very well.

1st July 2013
If the quiet period ever arrived it is now over. Its certainly been a busy day between the yard and the office. All the horses have settled in from Ireland and will be seeing the dentist tomorrow. They were all lunged this morning with a roller, only the Oscar horse disliked it.
Hopstrings will run on Wednesday at Worcester. Although she didn't beat a lot at Maisemore she has come on a lot and I expect her to give a good account of herself.
